What tool do you guys use to remove the diff plug? I must have used an open end wrench in the past but a 1/2" drive ratchet with a long extension sure seems like a better way to get up in there. The other day I went to Sears with the intention of buying just that: an 8 point, 1/2" drive socket that would fit (11/16" maybe?) and the guy gave me a blank look at first and then said, "they come in 6 or 12". After explaining what kind of fastener I was removing he knew exactly what I was talking about, but he said they don't carry 'em - end of conversation. But I have some 8 point Craftsman sockets in my tool set! - they're just too small. So they at least used to carry them. I've looked at a few parts stores and same thing. Tonight I tried some different 12pt sockets and actually got a metric size (I think 18mm) to grab and loosen it, but it wasn't a real good fit. What do you guys do?

5/8 for me also. If ya have the spare tire tub down, it is VERY accessable. After you get it out, you can trade it for the one with the 1/2 inch recess. A half inch drive extention will give you more of a reach in behind things and will be less of a pain.
Thanks guys. I did notice it was easier access with the spare out. If you use a plug with the square recess can you still use the red "positraction additive" warning flag?

No...not unless the plug you get has the small lip/flange on it like the factory plug does. That is what allows the use of the tag, and keeps it from falling off.
