I noticed that the casting on my shifter T-Handle was broken so I ordered a new part for my 68 big block 4 speed coupe.  I put the new T-Handle on and now notice that the reverse lock out is not working.  In the past, after I lifted the T-Handle, it felt like I had to push against a spring or something to get into reverse.  Now I can just push the shifter over with no resistance what so ever.  Anyone have any idea what I broke.  What needs replacement?  Is it a pin, spring?

Any help would be appreciated.

Mark

There is definitely a spring.. in order to reinstall, first, the reverse T-handle, then the spring, then your shifter knob. Pretty straight forward….. Are you using a stock shifter knob?

This is a stock shifter.  Yes, the spring is still under the cap.  When I lift up the T-Handle, I feel the spring, but when I push the stick to the left side, that is when I don't feel anything to push against.

Check to make sure the t-handle is the exact same length as your old one. There are at least 2 diff. length shifters out there. The later models use the longer shifters, and that's what most of the aftermarket/repro vendors sell. (Just an idea)

made me look. Just went out to my 69 L71 and checked the shifter. When I lift the lock out up, she moves over to the left with no resistance what so ever and shifts into reverse. Sounds like you fixed a problem you didn't know you had.

I think you hit upon something about the length of the T-Bar.  Will check it out.

OK, now it's fixed.  The one I ordered is 3/4 of an inch short.  I cut a piece off the old one and welded it on, so now it works fine.  Thanks for the advice on this one Adamsapple. This site is so valuable!
