Vette(s): 1976 C3 454 big block, 4 speed

I tried searching, but apparently I am doing something wrong, as I am unable to bring anything up. So here goes. After being a life long Mopar guy, I just purchased my first Corvette, it is a 1976 with a swapped in 454, 4 speed car, it is in pretty nice shape. I do have one thing that is driving me nuts, the 4 speed transmission is apparently on its last leg, I would like to upgrade to a 5 or 6 speed transmission, I have no problem getting the transmission ( Friend owns a bone yard ) but which tranny? and what other parts will I need to do the swap.

I am a pretty good fabricater, so making up a crossmember, shortening a driveshaft etc, should not pose a problem. I appreciate any help you guys can offer.

The 5-speed swap is pretty straightforward, but the 6-speed will require transmission tunnel modifications.

Check the Keisler website...they have complete kits with all needed parts for the swap. They use a modified Tremec transmission for their kits. Even if you find your parts through the boneyard, you can at least see what parts are needed.

Rode around some with a friend at Eureka Springs last weekend with a Kiesler 5 speed and a 454 in a '70.  Pretty sweet.  80 MPH at 2100RPM.  No changes on top and very few down below i believe.

I bought the Tremec kit at Carlisle. It appears that everything you need for the swap is there. I'm hoping that it is because it will sure save a lot of time in that I won't have to make multiple trips to where ever in trying to get "this" part or that "piece" to make it fit and work right. The kit is the way to go.

I installed the Keisler 5spd three years ago. I just installed the hydraulic clutch set up this year and fabricated the cross member. If I can help in any way, PM me. Dick

Vette(s): 1977 L-82 originally white/buckskin interior. Currently undergoing a frame-off resto. and modifications.YEEHAW!!!
I also purchased the Keisler Tramec kit at Carlisle this year. It arrived two weeks ago, and I CAN'T WAIT to install it.

The kit is truly a complete kit, complete with a new shift handle, and that coveted shift pattern badge for the console.

After it is installed, the only way to tell you have a 5-speed is the shift pattern on the console. Other than that, Keisler took care of the rest.

They even include a new driveshaft, which is nice. all you need to do is, after the tranny is installed, just measure for the new shaft, and they'll custom make you one, and ship it out.

If you can afford to do this, it will DEFINATELY save you the aggravation of trying to figure it out for yourself as you go along.

Either way you do it, good luck in your project.

Alan

You can do it Yourself if You don't want to do the Kit. The Tremec TKO 5 Speed Bolts Right in but the Shifter is Centered and the Stock Muncie had it on the side. So it won't line up with the Hole in the Console. The Tremec Shifter is Made by Hurst and they also make a Offset Shifter wich lines up with Console quite well. Mcleod has recently released a new Shifter wich has offset options. Keisler and Chevy 5 Speed Machine the Tailhouseing and install a diffrent Shifter made by Mcleod as well. Besides that on a Vette that has a 4 Speed the Crossmember is not a Bolt in and its a Real Pain to Install the Trans with the Engine in. Plan on Building a Bolt in Crossmember. Also the Yoke that Goes in the Tailshaft has an issue You can use a Turbo 350 one but You will have to Press in the U Joint Cups in Place up in the Tunnel. Keiler and Chevy 5 Speed have a Yoke with Bolt on Caps that they will Sell.  The Tremec 6 Speed needs some Tunnel Modes to fit it Weighs 33 Pounds More it Costs $700 more and if Your Engine has much Cam in it and Your rearend Gears are High You might not be able to Use 6th anyway. All the new style Transmissions wich ever You Use will have the Center Shifter Issue. Richard....

They explained to me that the shifter that comes with the kit that fits the C3's is offset to fit right in, only with some minor shaving to the fiberglass tunnel under the shifter boot. After complete installation only you'll know the difference. I've yet to touch this project as I'm still working on the suspension. As usual, any and all info is welcomed and appreciated.

I'LL BE GLAD WHEN SPRING GETS HERE!

P. S. Can you tell I'm not a Winter person?
