Well you came to the right forum for this question. I put a 700r4 in my vette last summer and could not be more happy with the swap. It gave my car much better drivability.Bow Tie Overdrives is a company that specializes in what exactly what you just asked about. I most highly recommend them. I bought every thing I need for the swap including there level 2 performance series transmission. They say is good for up to 450 hp and torque. They even have new crossmembers to fit the 700r4 so that you do not need to modify your own, just unbolt and bolt in the new one. Also they have excellent tech support. Here is a link to there web site:http://www.700r4.com/

I've got a Bowtie Overdrives 700R4 waiting to be installed in my 73.
They have everything you need to do the complete job, including mods for the shifter.
