Okay, I finally got the Upshifts where I want them..almost... but now the downshifts are WAY late. like the last downshift doesn't happen until I'm almost stopped. I've moved the TV  cable so many times that I've lost track of which way does what.

  HELP !

Normal coasting downshifts(not passing gear downshifts) are controlled by the governor. The TV cable will have nothing to do with that. The 2-1 downshift, when coming to a stop won't/shouldn't happen until you're almost stopped, due to the gear ratio. If it downshifts too soon, you'll get a pretty good jolt when it does, if you're moving too fast.
Some of this will also depend on the rear gear ratio, also. The weights on the gov. could be changed to help, but that will also effect the upshift timing. A heavier weight will upshift quicker, and downshift later. Most Corvettes, and Camaro/Fireturds that were equipped w/700s had the lightest weights there are, so they would upshift a little later, again, depending on the rear gear ratio.

What speeds are your upshifts coming in at?
Normal driving shifts on a 700 should be:
1-2 shift @ 18mph
2-3 @ 28
3-4 @ 45-48

Of course, we don't drive our Corvettes "normal"...
You should adjust the TV cable so the shifts are nice and clean...not slippy/mushy, then play with the gov. weights and springs to fine tune the timing of the shifts.

Weights on the governor? Where's the governor?  Only weights I've heard of were in the older distributers. I have an HEI car.

BTW, which way on the cable does what again?

The governor is on the driver side, rear of the trans. It has a large round cover over it. It just spins around in there, and the weights and springs react to the centrifugal force, and controls the governor pressure, which works against the TV pressure, to control the up/down shift timing. I think I have pics somewhere...lemme looks....

Otay...Here's what the gov. looks like, and Here's where it be located!Adams' Apple2007-10-31 19:54:35

You're Welcome, Redgrasshopperwing!
It's one of the few things I really DO know about...the rest of this stuff I just make up as I go.

OK TransMaster Joel..... Fix this one....

If I am going down the road in my '78 with the 700-R4 at 100 MPH in top cog (4th OD) and I shower down on it, it downshifts into 3rd and screams it's guts out (well almost).

Is there any way to prevent this downshift at speed???

Dave

There is a valve available to install in the valvebody to eliminate the high-speed 4-3 downshift. It will also give you a full throttle 3-4 upshift...if you want to keep yer foot in it long enough!
What speed are we talking here?
Are you sure it's not goin all the way to 2nd? If it's a 4-2 downshift at a lower speed(like, below 50mph or so), then a cable adjustment will take care of that.
