700R4 Update

Well folks, the trans as been in the car for about 2 years now and just never felt right. Finally made a wholesale decision and took off all of the Bowtie overdrive brackets and correctors and bought the generic Holley correction parts from Jegs.

Results? Well holy cow batman!!  Seems like the trans was almost holding the engine back!! She now climbs right of to 40-50 mph in second gear and wants to wind more!! Evil Smile

Bottom line - the BTO stuff works with their transmissions apparently because of what they do to it internally. It just didn't work no matter how much I played with the ajdustments. I now have for sale a BTO set up for a Holley and a Demon if anyone can use it. 

Feels like a new motor also went into the car - yahoo!!!!  Hug

I'm happy - can you tell??Big smile

Going to play with the governor weights and springs next...

Glad to hear you have it working better. I wasnt aware you were having issues with it. What exactly was happening. I hope to make some adjustments on my 2004r from bowties here in the next month or so. I also have purchased their set up. So now the lukester has more pull and zip! sounds like a bad thing for the lukesters tires!

The only real difference in the Bowtie trans is the TV(throttle valve) spring inside the valve body. They "recommend" you buy that spring if you want to use their cable/bracket kit with a non-Bowtie trans. That, and the fact that their carb adapter kits aren't always right/correct for the carb, makes it a little more difficult to get it all right. Teh last one of their cable/bracket kits I bout is still sitting in my tool box....I never could get it to actually fit on the carb, even tho I ordered it for the specific carb # I had, and they confirmed that was the kit I needed. Angry

Glad you got yours corrected....I'm surprised it survived that long without burning up.


btw...the TV spring they insist you use also comes in the Trans-Go shift kits...as far as I know, it's the exact same spring....and Bowtie prolly gets it from Uncle Gil to begin with...it's just a little longer, and a little stronger than the stock TV spring. Thumbs Up

Rod, she was shifting way too early when warmed up and downshifting was almost non-existent. The Holley brackets and a baseline setting put this puppy right back in the game!!  Vrpppm-chirp, vroooooom-chirp  - tires are screaming!!! Big smile

Joel, the unit was not slipping in gear or flaring between shifts. Talked to the builder (who was 400 miles away or he would have done this for me himself) and we verified that all was working well - nothing burning up.  Just not in the zone. The BTO spring wound up being the same as the spring that I changes out.

I do think BTO's stuff is overpriced - a new cable and the Holley brackets cost me half of what theirs did.  BTO stuff is now up on fleabay. Wink

Back when I installed my BTO 200-4R they did not have a bracket to fit my Holley carb so I made one work.

The travel of the valve should be 1.610” so I did the math. My throttle rotates 70degrees from idle to full open. Using this number I drew a picture. What this demonstrates is that a triangle can be drawn using the center of the throttle shaft as the starting point. Two lines that cross at that point at the proper degrees create side “A” and side “B”. Side “C” is the 1.610” travel for the valve movement. This gives a triangle where Side “A” = Side “B” and side “C” = 1.610 with angle “C” is 70 degrees. What this tells me is that length of side “A” and side “B” is equal to the radius of the circle that any point on that circle will move 1.610” when the throttle is moved from idle to full open. Now here comes the tricky part. The movement of the cable becomes a relationship between the point that it connects to the throttle plate and the bracket that holds the cable. If the center of the cable is mounted on the plane that is created by side ”C” it will see the most uniform movement that is possible. Any other position would throw off the alignment and cause for some readjusting. The other possible issue would be if someone made a change in the adjustment idle screw. This would change the angle of travel and again cause the need for the pressures to be rechecked.

I made a bracket extension and re-installed the Holley using the BTO cable bracket.
I attached the bracket with a bolt and after I did a small adjustment I drilled and pop-riveted it in place.

Here's another neat mod youse guys with the O/D automatics can do. It eliminates the biggest issue with getting the cable adjustment right, without pulling the adjustment out of whack, or bending the brackets....which is the lever on the trans end bottoming out before the throttle gets to wide open on the carb....

Excellent info guys. I've been afraid to do the install on the wife's car for fear of this very thing. No funds to recover from mistakes. She's overdue for a motor refresh too so I've got some planning to do.
