Topic: action needed urgent ?
in Forum: C3 Driveline Components
Hi everyone, been to Normandie and afterworths rather ill ( fever) ....so i think i'm made for working and not hoildays
Now seen on my vette : there is some play on the outgoing shaft on the trans . It is not the driveshaft coupling , it's on the shaft itself coming out of the trans. Does did need urgent repair or can i drive with it to do this job this winter ? Or can i damage much more inside this way ?

Depending on the tranz you have, 4spd or arotomatic, either one will have some play in the outpoot shaft. The bushing in the tailhousing eliminates this minor play, when the yoke is inserted.
If the yoke itself does not have any wear/groove on it where it rides in the bushing, you're OK.
If you have a lot of play with the yoke installed, then you may have a problem. Most of the time, if there is excessive play with the yoke installed, then the bushing is probably worn, as well as the yoke. The tailhousing must be removed to replace the bushing on either type of trans.

If you have a recurring rear seal(trans) leak, the bushing is the most likely culprit.
Good to see ya back!! Hope you feel better, now.

thanx Joel for reply ! sorry , but i'm not fully following you ... what is the yoke ? i took a pic , it's a 4 speed manual.
( sorry for the excessif grease , it was when i wanted to grease the coupling i remarked the play ... )
Perhaps does this say anything : when i push it up and down the play i hear a metal tiktik in the belhousing ! ????
thanx

LQQK HERE!

If you have a LOT of play with the yoke in the trans, as it is in the pic, then you may have a worn yoke, and bushing. Unbolt the driveshaft from the yoke, and slide the yoke out of the trans.(Put a drain-pan under there, so you don't make a mess!

Look at the yoke, and slide your fingers along the shiny area that goes inside the trans. If you can feel ANY wear, or difference in size from the middle of the yoke out to either end, the yoke is worn, and needs to be replaced. I have a worn yoke her, and I will take a pic of it and post for you.
If the yoke is badly worn, then the bushing in the trans is worn too.
OK....take a look at THIS. This shows the trans yoke, and where to look/feel for damage/wear. This one is pretty bad,(sorry, john

Hope this helps anyone with questions about this.

As far as you hearing a "tic-tic" in the bellhousing...are you sure you are not twisting the shaft ? You will get a little ticky noise when you turn the shaft a bit, back & forth. This is just the gears clicking as you take up the slack in them. Not a problem at all. Does your trans make any noise while driving? Whine? Growl? (Could you hear it if it did, with the side-pipes?!
