Vette(s): 1975 Corvette Convertible I am second owner of the car. It has 52,000 original miles on it.I am in the process of painting it. I see why they want so much for a paint job! Hope it comes out good! This is my first fiberglass paint job. Prep and more Prep!
Has anyone ever read where they installed a Gear Vendor Overdrive Unit in their vette? I have a 75 convertible and I have this OD unit that I pulled out of my truck before I sold it. It goes on the tailshaft of a turbo 400, you can split shift it and it makes a 3 speed into a 6 speed. I believe the od unit is like 10" long. If no replies I will let you know how it turns out after I get the car up in the air and check it out. |cheers|

I have heard it can be done, but crawl under the car and look-there is barely enough room for what is there. I think you will end up modifying the tunnell and moving the battery cable at a minimum-not to mention that the exhaust is close.

Gear Vendors is really proud of their OD unit, to the tune of the $2000.00 ballpark. A 700R4 trans bolts up and gets you a 0.7:1 OD 4th gear and with the lock-up converter it's almost like a 5 speed. Junkyard price on the trans is $3-400.00. You gotta cut about 3" off your driveshaft, but with a trans freshening, Corvette servo, TCI lockup kit and a Dacco 2000 RPM lockup stall converter you could be in business for under a grand.....

Just a lower buck alternate thought......

Since he already had the GVO, I didn't want to suggest that-but since you did, I have a 700 in mine, it's great. Sell the GVO and you will probably have enough for a tough 700R4. Be sure to get at least an 89 up 700R4-they have the best parts.

I have heard the 89 & up 700R4s are better too. I am getting ready to put one in my '78, but it is an older one with the 27 spline input shaft, but with the Corvette servo. It was to good a deal to pass up. Have any ideas what the difference is??

It's been a while, but weaker internals. I think it is the front pump and one of the gears inside. Probably an internet search on 700R4 rebuild will find some verbage on the difference in years. That being said I have an 83 3/4 ton chevrolet 4wd truck that got 75k on the original 700 with no extra cooler and pulling trailers regularly. A GM dealer did a basic reseal and it went another 4k and ate the front pump. Probably the earlier ones, particularly the 86-88 would be ok in a stock application. If you are going to lean on it, I'd pass.

I will definitely lean on it and see how far and long it will go since I already have the tranny and about ready to slip it under..........
