I went to adjust the clutch on my 79 4 speed.  There was a threaded opening in the middle of the cross shaft.  Does anyone know if there is supposed to be a grease fitting there?

Not from the factory, tho it is there for that purpose. From the factory there was a small, red plastic plug in the hole...

Guys, Thanks for the information.  I guess the next question (maybe stupid) is the part meant to be greased?

No stoopid questions here...
They did put the fitting there to aid in greasing the Z-bar, but they didn't put a zerk in it so it wouldn't get greased too often, or too much.
You can, and prolly should put a few squirts in there every now and then, depending on how much you drive. There are, or there are supposed to be, some felt washers at the ends, by the pivot balls, to keep some dirt out of the bar. If you put too much grease in there, it'll push the felt washers out, so, this is a case of "a little dab'l do ya"...
