Hello to all.  I own a 1974 L 82 coupe with a 4 speed.  I had the car up on jack stands for some time and recently put the car back down on the ground.  As I was lowering one side of the car it came down a little too far and too fast, and I heard a kind of creaking noise.  Something must have broken or disengaged because when I depress the clutch the car tries to start in gear. I can start the car in neutral but I can not shift into gear.  I inspected the linkage and did not find anything that appeared to be broken.  The clutch and tranny were in good operating condition prior to this.  Could this be a problem with the ball stud?

Hi.. well, sounds like a delima... and i hope Joel has my back on this, but obviously something is out of whack with the clutch... is there pressure on the clutch pedal when you depress it?... you may want to crawl back under and look at the Zbar and the clutch rod and fork. Rarely ever heard of a fork coming off the ball stud, but the little spring retainers on the back sometimes have a mind of their own....  but i would start by looking underneath and tugging on the Zbar, rod and fork to make sure they are in place,  and also make sure the clevis pin is on the end of the clutch rod and fork.... below is a link to a picture of the assembly to give you an idea of what you're looking at....

My first question is, how long has this car been sitting? You stated it had been on stands "for some time". If it has been sitting without being started for quite some time, the clutch disc may actually be stuck to the pressure plate or the flywheel. This is assuming, of course, that all of the linkage is connected, as shown in the pic Jim posted. If all of the linkage is still attached properly, then my bet would be on the clutch just simply stuck to the p-plate/flywheel.
You can usually get a stuck disc to free up by pushing on the clutch all the way, put the car in 4th gear, and have a few buddies "rock" the car forward and backwards. IF this frees it up, then I would recommend that you get ready to replace the clutch soon...it will not last long, if this is the problem.

(btw, Jim...that bellhousing should not be painted completely...just about 2-3 inches closest to the engine was painted, originally.    picky b#$%@^d, ain't I?)
