I知 going to replace my rear spring in a few weeks and while under the car, I plan to fix a pesky differential leak.  The leak is from the front pinion seal but it never drops a drop on the floor of the garage.  It just coats the underside of the car.  "Diff oil seems to make a good undercoat removerSmile."  Is this how a pinion seal leak starts and will it get worse?  I did check the differential plastic vent this evening and it was kind of gummed up.  I removed the cap and poked a wire down it and noticed a little resistance at first but I知 not sure it was truly plugged.  I plan to clean things up a bit around the pinion and floor pan then check for fresh oil over the next few weeks.

If the pinion seal is leaking, it will not get any better over time...funny how that works! If you see evidence of gear lube on the body over and around the pinion, the seal is definitely leaking, and it will get worse. How bad it gets, and how soon it happens depends on how much you drive it. Don't let it go too long, tho...the seal is cheaper than rebuilding the diff.

Right about not letting it go too long. My front and side yoke was leaking. Kept putting it off and ended up ruining side yoke and gears. Having everything replaced now. Since it's out of the car.

Thanks for the replys.  Any gotchas to look out for when replacing the pinion seal?  I have read a few post and service manuals that cover it and the trickiest part seems to be the tightening of the Pinion nut.  Is it as simple as marking the nut/pinion and counting the number of threads showing before removal.  Then tighten back to that same spot?  Or do I need t dial torque wrench or spring gage to measure the torque required to start the diff turning.

I did both of my 79s, one laying under the car on the floor and the other on a lift. Find someone with a lift!!! Marking everything so it goes back together exactly the same is the way to go. But keep in mind that nut is TIGHT!. I made a holder from a 1 1/4" X 1/8" X 4' long angle iron I got from Home Depot. Drill 2 holes to line up with one of the holes from each half of the flange so that it fits cradled against the flange. Grind a big notch between the holes to acquire access to the nut.  Bolt it on to the flange. A length of pipe on the end of the breaker bar and you got the leverage to break it loose. I don't like the idea of using an impact on this as you're banging on the gears inside. Removing the pinion snubber bracket is a must. 12" extension on the breaker bar from in front of the crossmember will reach the nut. I used my harmonic ballancer puller to pull out the yoke. I install the seal tight to the nose of the housing, I've read where some say to leave 1/8" space but factory fit was tight so I don't understand the gap. A dab of silicone on the back side of the nut/washer is good insurance against leaks. I use nothing on the splines. Good luck. mkapp78792007-05-21 20:59:54

Thanks for the insight, What about tightening the flange nut when you put things back together? Did you just line up the witness marks or torque to some specific value?

Mkaap7879, a big thanks for the angle iron tip.  I made one as you suggested and had no problems removing the pinion nut.

It痴 been a few days with no leaks so far, only time will tell.  Back on the road for now
