It there any difference in the driveshaft for a TH350 VS A TH400 tranny? I just bought a new one from ZIP products on line and then saw in the catalog that it was good for a TH400. I think I have a TH350 in my early 1976 L48 but I'm not sure.Embarrassed

TongueIf your tranny is original, it is probably a TH350.  Mine is an early 76 - L48 and has the TH350.  The L-82s apparently still came with the 400.  You can tell easily by looking at the pan (probably don't even need to raise the car).  The pan is a square shape.  The TH400 shape is pointy at one end and square on the other (very obvious difference).  I think it also has a couple of factory indentations in it.

As far as whether the drive shaft will interchange with the TH400 drive shaft, I don't know for certain (someone here does know I'm sure).  If there is a difference, I think it would only be in the splines in the yoke (no length change).

My L-48

Hmmm...the 400 and the 350 are different lengths. The yokes stay in the trans(u-joints bolt to the yoke), so that wouldn't be a problem anyway. I may have to look in the Gm parts book to see if there were different shafts now...

Well, I confirmed I have a TH350 (by looking at the filter cover).
I also confirmed that the TH350 is different than the TH400 in length so all I really need to know now is did ZIP products send me a drive shaft that will work on my TH350 OR one for a TH400 .
I sent an e-mail to their tech and asked that question.  But for those interested in the drive shaft I got:
The P/N on the drive shaft tag is SU-421 WITH additional number below *D21601Z*. The shaft dimension taken from centers on u-joint casting (at pivot point) is 29 1/2"

If they sent you a TH400 shaft, it shouldn't fit.  The trans are different lengths.

The 400 is longer than the 350.

Well, I just got off the phone with the tech at ZIP products and he assures me that the shaft I got will fit the TH350 tranny. So with a trusting heart I'm off to the drive shaft shop with my tranny yoke to get the assembly balanced. Wish me luck! Thanks for all the input guys!Smile

I won't installing the drive shaft until around February as I'm still trying to save up the money for my transmission rebuild first. I'm changing the motor to a new ZZ4 and wanted to redo the drive line at the same time. Tha't why the new driveshaft, u-joints etc...
I will post a report on the total upgrade once I finish, hopefully March or April.Dead
