I asked the mech that wrenches my car about replacing the e-brakes, complete job. He said that he will only do it if he replaces the rear wheel bearings too.
Could someone give me some professional advice here ?
Another opinion ?
Is replacing the bearings necessary ? My 79 has 59,778 original miles, and I know it may be good idea to look at them or replace already.
I listen to him carefully and he has not steered me wrong yet.
He is the best I know with the C-3's, and has more business then he can handle. |saluteflag| |cool|

There is no parts failure that ties the parking brake service in with the rear wheel bearings. Two different things.

BUT.......

You need to remove all of the parking brake parts to get to the rear wheel bearings. The thought here is instead of waiting for the bearings to fail at a later time, just do it all at once. The labor is much less than doing it at two different times. This is cost effective in the long run, and while it may not be necessary it could be a good money saver. You are not paying to do the brakes twice. And it could prevent a rear bearing failure in the future. Maintance is always cheaper than repairs. Depending on mileage, maintance, and previous repairs, it's good advice.

Boatman, your mechanic is not steering you wrong. Replacing the e-brakes with the spindles in place is not impossible, but it is going to be one of the most frustrating jobs you will ever remember. When these cars were assembled at the factory the rotors were riveted to the spindles, then the spindle assembly was pressed in over the e-brake assembly. There are 2 retaining pins that secure the e-brakes to the back plate, only one of them can be replaced without removal of the backing plates. In order to remove the backing plates the spindle must be removed. My recommendation is do the bearings at the same time as the e-brakes, and maybe spring for some new backing plates. Might not hurt to sandblast and powdercoat the t-arms while it's apart. Sorry, i'm used to every repair on these cars leading to another project.

Thanks guys! I'm in the same boat. I'm even going further to replace the u joints and do some massive cleaning and repainting underneath. The one thing I'm not sure about yet is should I replace my steel spring with a new fiberglass spring? I think it could wait and be done later with not to much work taking everything apart.

Flandy - $450.00. I sent you separate mail. I did not go for it. I had only the SS e-brakes done today, without the cable for $199.00, total. A different shop, works great.
The $450.00 may be worth it, but seemed a bit high. Does anyone out there know what RW bearing job and SS e-brakes RR, should cost?
For anyone's info: RR, means remove and repair.

Eric, I would go ahead and do the rear spring the same time. If you have it all torn down anyway why cause yourself more labor in the future. That's my way of thinking. I am doing my rear shocks and leaf spring this weekend. I was only going to replace the shocks and leaf and when I started to tear things down a couple of weeks ago, I found that my rear end cover was cracked at the mount for the leaf. I ordered the heavy duty cast replacement along with the new gasket and fluids to do the job and I am now at the point of putting things back together. Seems like one job always leads to another.

Anyway that's my two cents worth.
