I like the original equipement idea but I plan to keep the vette.
I was planning to do a rear end change out for a 12 bolt or aftermarket.
Since the vette is a full chasis car I believe this should be a simple bolt in application. My concern is a leaf spring or coil set up. Has any member done this mod already? If so were the conversion parts readily available?

Thanks

Vette(s): 1975 C3 Red, T-Tops, Black Interior. All I need is time and money! Getting there!
Are you planning to put a solid axle in place of the independent rear?

If so, I don't know of any coversion kits.  This is not a common change due to the loss in handling.  Usually done just for very high horsepower drag racing.  Perhaps below 10 second cars.

Yap solid axles. I guess when handling is a mayor concern and after market components I could see the mods being more intense.
Is the vette axle shafts good for 475 pounds of torque?

That kind of torque is not unheard of in a Vette.   If you question if the standard drive line is enough, you can change the stub shafts in the diff, and use heavier shafts, u joints, etc of the big block cars.  Those components won't even blink at that torque.   The suspension itself can handle it without a problem.

Vette(s): 1976 coupe with a custom body and a 396 big block with nitrous installed. Runs great!!
The hardest thing on the rear is shock loading or droping the clutch at high rpm. It is not set up to do Banzi launches. You can change to a solid axle but the handleing will suffer and it takes a lot of major work to get it in. Not worth the trouble unless you are going strickly dragracing with a high horse power engine. Say 550 +

If you want to bulletproof your Vette's rear go to Tomsdifferentials.com He has all the good stuff to make the rearend as strong as you want. He even has a 12 bolt gear swap into a C-3 rear housing assembly. This is much stronger than the stock 8.2 rear gear. 1430 universals!!! Heavy duty carrier bearing caps with 1/2 vs. the stock 7/16 cap bolts and more Try him out .I did. Great people to deal with too.Building up a 9" can get expensive let alone butchering the rear to get it to fit. I got a 396 from a 68 chevelle with Nitrous and not asceared to drop the hammer.custom762008-09-09 12:33:30
