73 automatic transmission, 190 HP, nothing fancy.  Assuming everything is still standard, what is my gear ratio.  I can't find the numbers on the case.

My book shows standard as a 3.36:1 with optionals of 3.70:1, 3.08:1, 3.55:1 and 4.11:1.  Personally I thought the standard ratio was 3.08:1.  Put it in the air and give it a spin.

Most automatic L48s had the 3.36 ratios, but the 3.08 is the standard ratio...
These are the only two ratios available for the 400 with the L48.

The axle code(s) will be on the very bottom of the diff., just in front of the spring, close to where the cover bolts onto the diff housing.

AW = 3.08
AX = 3.36
LR = 3.36Adams' Apple2006-10-19 18:31:41

mine came with a auto and the 3.08 gears. I replaced it with a 3.55 even before I put in the od trans. What rpm's do you see at 70mph? With the 3.55 I was almost 3300rpm's.  with a 3.08 you should see around 2700rpm's. Here is a calculator: http://richmondgear.com/101032.html
