I just swapped out my 3:08 gears for a set of richmond 3:70's. what an improvement! The job was not bad at all. I just wanted to say, for anyone thinking about it, but maybe a litte gun shy, do it. It is worth the time.
Last winter I built the motor and kind of over did it on the cam, considering the 3:08 rearend. the combination I used was as follows.
355 4 bolt
world products sportsman II heads
64cc combustion chamber
flat top pistons
comp Xtreme 268 cam and lifters
holy 670 street avenger carb
dyno-max ceramic coated headers
tci 350 trans.
I was never happy with the finished product. There was just no torque. Now I"m a happy camper.
Next up....17" wheels

I went to the 700r and 3:55 rear gear. It was a perfect combo! Quick off the line and 70mph is about 2100 rpm!

Can I assume the 700-r bolts right up? What else is needed in the swap? |headscratch|

The 700r will NOT bolt right up! The cross member needs to be repositioned and the drive shaft shortend about 1 1/2 inches. The shifter will need another 'position' for the extra gear. Also added the new shift indicator. All in all not too bad.

Speaking of gears...I am looking for a 3.08. I would like to swap the complete differential unit, but will swap gears. I have a new 3.70 richmond, no miles; and a 3.36 in the car with approx 2500 miles on it. The whole differential unit was completely rebuilt, posi-clutches etc. 2500 miles ago.
