Fellow Vette Heads

I am ready to pull the trigger and buy the Hurst Comp Shifter. I have a T10 Trans. The installation instructions seem to be pretty straight forward, but all do. One question that I have is, do you install the shift rods onto the shifter after or before you mount it to the plate that bolts onto the side of the Trans. Also I heard that you should not use the bushing that come with the installation kit but to buy metal ones because of wear. Another question is should I drop the Trans cross member to disconnect my stock shifter from it or leave in connected and break my fingers trying to get it out.

Everyones input and tricks will be considered.

Thanks Tom |headscratch|

80ty, I don't think the 80 4-speed has a removable crossmember. Anyway, removing your old shifter and installing the Hurst is a relatively simple job and you do not need to remove a crossmember. The job goes easier if you can put it on a lift. After removing the old unit, push the shifter stick up through the console boot, then mount it to the trans. There are three mounting bolts. Next adjust your linkage rods to proper length. I recently had a Hurst rebuilt by Hurst/Mr Gasket and it was returned with metal buttons, not nylon. Hurst wouldn't use nylon, they make good stuff. After adjusting rod length you need to adjust the 1-2, 3-4 stop bolts and you are done. Put the shift knob on inside and go driving.
