Topic: is this normal in an independent rear suspension?

Im thinking its not.
when I am crawling at idle (taking foot off brake pedal and just the idle is pulling the car) it sometimes feels like one, or both of the rear wheels are rocking back and forth a bit. I guess that's the best way to describe it.
almost as if the wheels are loose. (and before anyone asks, I checked, they aren't loose
).
However, once I get moving, it straightens out and its fine.
does this sound like worn universals? the driver's side is tight as a drum all around. the passenger side has a tiny bit of play in the wheel end universal joint but nothing extremely bad (yet)

Check your tires. Sometimes a broken belt will do that side to side thing. I had that on another car.
Do you hear rear tire noise at speed or is it quiet? Have you had someone walk/run beside the car at idle to see if they hear any grinding or friction noise from either side? I concur with Indy that you can get that "wobbling feeling" from a damaged side-wall belt.

Too much camber can cause that, but if that was the case, you would hear the half-shafts binding up, and it wouldn't go away as you speed up. I'm in agreement with the other fellers...I'd be looking at the tires....soon!

Does it rock side to side or front to back....a test drive friday would have eliminated all this..can it wait till next weekend..maybe we can meet up..

Moving tires around MAY not necessarily eliminate one(or more) as the cause. A slipped belt on a tire will rock the car side/side regardless of if it is on the front or the rear.
That being said, I'm sure you're satisfied that the tires are in good shape.
That leaves only an issue with the halfshafts, or the spindle bearings. Either of those SHOULD have a noise associated with it.
What does the rear spring look like, if you look at it from the rear? Straight, bent up slightly, or down slightly?
Are the rear tires perpendicular, as in, straight up/down, or do they lean in at the top or bottom?(or does one lean more than the other?)
You didn't mention if there was any noise associated with the rock, but is there?
