Has anyone used a flexplate safty shield? Will it fit within the confines of the "74" glass tunnel? I'm thinking of this CSR flexible shield linked here  http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=CSI%2D835&N=7  Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated...thanx! corvette440hp2008-03-30 13:12:31

It will NOT fit in the tunnel...sorry.
If you're really worried aboot the flywheel flyin...get a SFI spec flywheel.

[QUOTE=Adams' Apple]It will NOT fit in the tunnel...sorry.

Now onto more: I already have the heavy-duty GM Part #12554824 (one piece rear seal,  168 tooth). I know that's what GM would like us to use for extra revs, but it wasn't ever SFI certified. This flexplate is for an internal balanced engine, with an external balanceing on the flexplate itself. My next stump the GURU is: ATI now has a flexplate SFI approved but it is balanced neutral. here is the link:      http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?part=ATI%2D915534&autoview=sku. Can this be used on my Generation 1, GM (later version) one piece seal crank. I'm mixed up about the neutral balance verses the exteral balance plates?  JOEL, HELP...............PLEASE! corvette440hp2008-03-30 16:39:29

First...what size engine does you have?
If it is a stroker(383-406), it will need a specific flywheel for the engine.
Same is true for a small block 400...they take a specific flyingwheel.

If it is a 350, then it should be internal balanced, with no weight on the flywheel.

If it is a 454, then it HAS to have the 454 flywheel, as they are external balanced, using the flywheel.

The flywheel you linked to is for internal balanced engines, meaning a 350(stock), or one that has been balanced with mallory metal on the crankshaft throws.

If there is a question about the flywheel from Summit, you can call them and find out for sure if that particular one will work on your engine. If it won't then they will be able to suggest the proper one that will.

Thanks again Joel. The engine is a later Gen 1, 5.7 liter (350), one piece rear seal. The non SFI plate is the GM Performance Parts heavy duty 168 tooth...........with a big ugly external weight. here is a link to it:   http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?part=NAL%2D12554824&autoview=sk. I'm wondering if I should go to the ATI neutral balanced one (SFI) linked here: http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?part=ATI%2D915534&autoview=sku. I'm thinking this might be the better choice. Joel, you must make lots of money (HaHA) answering all of these questions. Thanks Joel!

I was looking at some stuff this morn...apparently, the later, one-piece rear seal engines DO use an eternal balance flywheel.
We call it the "Terradactyl" weight, because of the shape of it!
Soooo...you'll prolly need one like that, if you change the flywheel.

yeah...I'm filthy rich...
