Topic: Leaky Tranny
in Forum: C3 Driveline Components
Can anyone advise me? My Tranny seems to be leaking from the fitting where the Speedo Cable goes in, drip-drip-drip, can I fix myself, or should I run it in and take the hose? I beleive there is an o-ring under there, but can it be accessed without major wrenching?
Thanks Guys,

There are actually two seals there. One seals the speedo gear itself, and the other seals the housing(bullet) to the tail housing. The housing(bullet) on your trans should be alumimum.(I hate that word!

Unscrew the speedo cable, first, and move it out of the way.
You need a 10mm wrench to loosen the hold-down bracket. Take the housing(bullet) off, and the speedo gear will come out with it.(the speedo gear just slides in the bullet) There is an o-ring around the outside of the bullet, and a "lip" seal inside, towards the end the cable connects to. There will be a small, "C" shaped wire ring holding the seal in the bullet. Use a small, flat-tip screwdriver(a pocket screwdriver works great) to flip the wire ring out, but watch it; its not very big, and it gets lost easily!
Now you need to get new seals. Most auto-parts places won't have them, so go to a tranny shop and ask for them. The o-ring & the seal shouldn't be more than a couple of bucks. (If they are, holler at me, and I'll send ya some in the mail for nothin.)
The o-ring is just remove & replace. The gear seal, you need to pay attention to the direction of the seal, as it goes into the bullet. The flat side will go to the outer(cable) side. Then replace the wire ring, pushing it snugly against the seal. Reinstall the gear, and stick the whole thing back into the trans, and tighten the bracket. Presto-sealo!

If, by chance you have a steel bullet, the seal inside of it is a metal-clad seal, and those are a little harder to do. It's easier to just replace the bullet on those. They're about $8, but I can get you one of them, also, gratis.

Joel,
Thanks for you help Buddy, I fived it last nite. You were right about the parts stores, went to my buddy at O'Reillys he spent 30 min. looking thru his literature and came up empty handed. He did tell me of a Transmission part place that I would never have found. I walked in told the old guy what I wanted, he never even looked it up went down the aisle and came back with the correct parts. $3.30 total, No Leaks this morning when I looked. I may in the near future replace tranny anyway, do you sell and ship them also besides work on them?
Thanks Again & Have A Grewat Day!

Sure, I could sent you a unit. It's best to use the orig. unit, tho. That way all the stuff(speedo gears, etc.) will be correct. If & when you get ready to do it, either way, just give me a holler, & we'll figure it out.
