Vette(s): 1969 Corvette Stingray Convertible. Just bought it from my uncle who owned it since 1971. Fathom green, green interior. 350/300, T400.

My tranny might have to come back out due to a noise in 1st gear (still under warranty). A buddy suggested while it's out I should install a low gear set from TCI. I have 3.08 gears and it's not the greatest off the line. Anyone install a low gear set in an automatic? Looking for some opinions please.

Thanks,

Matt

Assuming you still have the 400 trans, it would be a good investment. The planet set would change the ratio not only in first gear, but second, also(as well as reverse). Third gear would be the same 1:1 ratio. It will make a big difference in take-off.
Be aware, tho, you might get a little more noise in 1st & 2nd with these gearsets. It's usually not that bad, but some people have complained about it. It is not a durability concern, tho, just a little of a more pronounced "whine".
If the unit you have now is only making a noise in 1st, before removing it, make sure the trans mount is in good condition. The 400 trans makes a normal whine in first, but a bad mount will make it sound like the thing is about to explode! It just allows the noise to travel easier into the cockpit area, if the trans is sitting on the crossmember, due to a bad mount. Just a thought!

Vette(s): 1969 COUPE CORTEZ SILVER, BRIGHT BLUE INTERIOR 383 cu. in. 512 HP. Hooker headers w/ side pipes PS PS AC AM FM STEREO. 68,000.MILES C5 5oth Anniversary Coupe , auto.350hp

I replaced the 3:08`s in my 69. I have the same base motor( which is now being built as a 383) I installed 3:55`s. It made quite a difference in pick up.It was a little noisier especially aT HIGHER RPM`S. bUT , NOTHING i COULDN`T LIVE WITH.You may want to consider some engine mods to give you the snap your looking for.

Good luck.
