I have a whining coming from the right (passenger side) rear of the car. It seems to go away under acceloration and whines more during coasting or feathering of the throtle. It hasn't gotten worse in 4 years nor has it gotten better. The entire rear end from the lugs to the pumpkin were rebuilt as was the brakes and suspension..  Thoughts? 

It sounds like you have a problem with the ring and pinion clearances. I had one many years ago that sounded like a siren behind me. Maybe Joel will give some more ideas on the whine. 

Thats what I thought but I had the noise before the diff was rebuilt too 

what about the universal joints on the drive shafts?  you do have 3 drive shafts. Movie Collector2008-04-23 09:36:30

Kevin, the wheel/trailing arm bearings are prolly failing...they will whine when they get dry, and start galling. Eventually, the whine will turn into a grind...
Did they do the t-arm bearings too?
A whine/noise under accell, or decell, is usually contributed to gear noise in the diff. If the diff was rebuilt, the noise should have at least changed, if it was in fact a diff noise.

It could also be a tire noise...ya never know.
Try moving the tires around, and see if the noise follows...

The tires are new, had the noise w/the old tires. The U joints are all new. The noise I think did change when the diff was done.   WHen the diff was done they siad the t-arms/bearings were ok. 

No maintenance on the bearing assys...just replacement when they take a dump.
IF the noise is definitely coming from the pass side...it pretty much would have to be a t-arm bearing....
I'd have someone check it out for looseness...there should be no movement of the wheel...

Adam - I had her up on a lift last night. The t-arms and bearings are all ok. We went thru w/a fine tooth comb. After talking with Frank and Jim (My wrenches) they told me they did a few rear-rebuilds on 80-82s. I went first and others followed w/the 3:55's...  They had 2 diff shops do the carrier rebuilds (all a-1 top shelf guys). It seems the 3:55s from this one vendor just seem to be a little whiney. Everything is to spec and lubed. It's one of those make the radio or the exhaust louder sorta things....  All is ok..    

I would get another opinion and find out what the fix truly is - other than turning up the radio.

That's the gears "singing a song." From what you originally described I really thought that it had to be the gears. I'm wondering if they were set up properly.
