Ok so I have unhooked the switch at the tranny, as it is giving me some grief, it is so stiff that shifting to reverse was hard and actually loosened off bracket on firewall.  Now key will not turn off so can't get key out , do i need to move the bracket on the tranny where it was hooked forwards or backwards or did I miss something else?

You should be able to turn the bowl on the steering column counterclockwise to get the key out. The bowl is the part just forward of the steering wheel.

A standard trans car doesn't have a neutral safety switch....it has a clutch switch on the clutch pedal. The switch on the trans by reverse is for the back-up lights. It sounds like the lock-out cable is dry, or seized up, making it hard to get it in reverse, and get the key out. You can tie the lever on the column(under the hood) UP until you get the cable fixed.
