Vette(s): 1969 Corvette Stingray Convertible. Just bought it from my uncle who owned it since 1971. Fathom green, green interior. 350/300, T400.

I have the differential out. I'm taking it to a good mechanic that I know to re seal it and put in new fluid. the question I have is should I replace the pinion seal as long as it's out? It's not leaking (yet). The mechanic says he can do it without screwing up the pinion depth.

Thanks,

Matt

Matt,

I'd relpace the seal now as its easy & cheap and it will leak it the future...who needs another headache.

Hey Matt, I consider havin him take the rear cover off and look at the axles. See how much space there is between the end of the axle and the snap ring. When the axles start to wear on the pin for the spyder gears, trouble is not far away, especially if the distance to the snap ring is gettin small. This leads to rear alignment problems and finally the clutches in the posi chattering. New axles have about 3/16" to 1/4" between the snap ring and end of the stub. When I took mine apart, the end of the axle was worn down to the snap ring, consiquentally, I had to use a die grinder to get the axles out of the side gears. Needless to say, this leads to a complete rebuild of the diff. The rear was alway full of lube and had additive in it. Now, I'm up to about $500.00 in parts. Including a new cover. One of the signs is the rear tires leaning in at the top when parked. Just my .02.

Dave

Go ahead and do it while the differential is out. Far easier to do it now than later and pay twice for much the same work.

Thanks Guys! I took the trailing arms out last week, those little U bolts for the half shafts were actually harder to get out than the trailing arms!
