Help.. Just finished re-doing everything under my 81 Vette... Frontend to new rear-end, including all U-joints, rear brakes with complete new assembly arms.. Trans. overhaul, new clutch assembly, everything.. Cost me a fortune... Should be perfect, instead I'm getting a popping noise when I let out the clutch.. Noise seems to originate in the rear of the car... My mechanic put the Vette on a lift, but can't seem to find the cause of the noise.. It sounds like a U joint.... Only makes noise when the car is torqued, not when up in the air shifting gears... Any ideas.. bdebes 38919.9345601852

Many possibilities here...
U-joints(new or not, they can still make noises)
Stub shaft or hub shaft spline wear
Front diff mount bushing
Strut rod bolts not tightened
Diff crossmember mounts/bolts
Trailing arm bolts not tightened
yadayadayada...
The only real way to verify the source is to have the car on a drive-on lift. Then you can put the driveline under tension, and locate the source of the noise. With the wheels hanging, there is no real stress on the driveline.
Hope this gives you some ideas.

Thanks Joel,
Instead of doing the work myself, I opted, due to a heavy work travel schedule, to have it done... Guess that old story, if ya want it done right, do it yourself, holds true..

Joel is on the money. But go around and tighten all of the bushing bolts. I have found that many times behind some one elses work.
