Hey...
anyone know what kind of job replacing the rear differential seal is?
My mechanic tells me my rear differential seal is leaking, and I should replace it before I head to Bowling Green at the end of this month.
I have to go away on business next week and I'm thinking about taking this to a local mechanic where I'm going to be.
Is this something a decent mechanic should be able to handle, or should I wait until I can get someone with MAJOR Vette experience?

Vette(s): 1979 Black coupe. 11256 original, documented, miles on it when I bought it in April of 2000. It now has 13100 on it. Oyster interior, like new. Everything original, everything works, except the clock. Paint has a couple of minor flaws.
Adam,
Any GOOD mechanic should be able to handle this job with ease. The fun part is finding a GOOD mechanic. If you trust him, go for it.

I agree. It should be an easy job. It isn't something I've done myself yet, but I wouldn't think twice about starting it. I'm actually thinking about doing it this summer. I don't remember when the fluid was changed on it so it would probably be good for my vette.

Turns out I was wrong...
It is the Right Rear Bearing Seal.
Is that hard?
Also, my trans has a slight oil leak, and this morning a coolant leak starting!

Ouch. Sounds like it is one thing after the other Adam!! I don't really know about the bearing seal, I have a friend who is pretty good at it so I doubt a good mechanic will have any problems with it. Your other two leaks may be easy to fix. Just try and find where they are leaking. A tranny gasket is easy to replace and a hose for the coolant would be cake too. Just clean off the fluid then see where it starts to build up again.

I took it to a Chevy dealer today. I'm actually out of town on business, so I took it to the closest Chevy dealer.
He looked at the right rear bearing seal and said that it's not leaking. He said there is minor seapage, but it's normal. PHEW!
He found the coolant leak... as I feared, it's the radiator. I'm guessing I busted it up while I was fighting with it to get it out. This one is gonna cost me $300 + labor!
He also found that the Rear Main Seal of the engine is leaking!?
I don't get that one... it's a brand new engine! Any thoughts on that?!

Adam,
If the engine is new, doesn't it have a warranty for oil leaks? Did you buy it from Chevy or someone else?
I've noticed a couple of oil spots on the garage floor. Corvette's just seem to leak a lot!! Also I have Mobil 1 in the engine, and I 've heard that it will leak, where normal oil won't. Any truth to that?

I bought it from Jim Pace Pontiac at http://www.paceparts.com. It is a GM Goodwrench crate engine. It does have a warranty, but I'm not sure what is covered. I'll have to check when I get home.

Adam,
I could be way way out in left field here, but shouldn't the mechanic who got your engine running have noticed any leaks? I would think that the engine has a 12/12 warranty with it.

Hey Adam, if that is a new engine the rear main will be covered by warranty, not the labot though. One question, did you replace the intake manifold? I have seen the rear of the intake leak and run down the back of the engine looking like it is the rear main. Just something you may want to check first.
