I just saw an add for a rear drain kit. They list kits for up to 79 and 84 up but none for 80's, of course I have an 80. Anyone installed one of these kits? Is there a differance between 79 & 80 rears? I though they were the same.

Thanks Glenn

Glenn, when I did mine I use a hand held siphon pump. Took all of he old crap out and used it to put the new stuff in. Might be an idea for you |biggrin|

Milkman you can buy a magnetic drain plug for the rear for about 5$ . They usually are 1/2 20 tpi thread . You can run a 29/64 drill into the housing and then tap it . Very easy job to do . The 80 rear is alum alloy and I can e/mail you a pic where to drill it . BTW chips inside are no problem at all , all of these rears have more steel metal debris floating around in them than you would ever believe . This is all due to the contact between the inner axle stubshafts and the spider gear cross shafts . The case is not thick and very easy to drill and tap , just let the old crap run out and when you finish just refill the unit and add a couple of bottles of posi lube .

George,
You might want to give him an idea of how much torque to put on that drain plug. Be a damn shame to go through all that and end up stripping the threads the first time he tightens the plug.
I know I have a tendency to over tighten things that are "pluging" liquid.

Glenn you are dead on ! If you get frisky with one of these drain plugs after you install it bye bye threads . A very handy solutionto that problem is to put a light coat of RTV on the plug and lightly tighten it. The rtv keeps it in place and is easy to remove also .

Yes give me an idea where to drill & tap the rear, BTY mite it be a good idea to tap in a SS Hemi-Coil to help avoid stripping the Alum? I'll be getting at the car in about 2 weeks, just ordered the new rear spring & true duel exhaust today. Figured it would be easer to change the spring with the exhaust already off. So while I am under there I figured I mite as well put the drain in.

Thanks Glenn

I will e/mail you a pic , when I did mine I added an extra thick boss to pick up the extra thread . I also made a provision so it holds a neodium magnet in addition to the magnetic plug . A little anal I know LOL .
