If this is not in the right spot, please feel free to move it.
There are a lot of people on this forum who have high HP cars. What have you guys/gals done to the rear end to beef it up so it takes the higher HP? Thicker half-shafts, solid U joints, etc. ?

Hello Glenn,
The rear end of a vette is definitely the weak link. The only thing I did was replace the u-joints with "Brute Force" units. Periodically check bolts for tightness, and do a visual check on the halfshafts and diff. mounting points looking for anything twisted, bent, or cracked.
You guys with the 63-79's can put a heavy duty rear end cover on to beef up the a$$ a little. Someone (I think it was Tyla???) said the 80-82's were stronger than the 79 and before rear ends.
I've seen vette's with real high horsepower have a 9" straight axle fitted into them. Those I don't consider a true vette anymore. More of a drag car.
If you would like, I could call Denny's Driveshafts for you to find out what the cost of custom heavy duty halfshafts/driveshaft would be. They are only 10 miles from my house.

I'm just waiting for the day to come when something breaks in the rear end. There's no rust back there and I know the PO replaced the joints (I'm sure they are stock replacements) but I too have heard from others that it is the weak link. Anybody out there that has broken something in the rear end?

Rick,
You can tell if they are stock units very easily. Take a quick look and see if there is a grease fitting in them. If so, they are stock. The heavy duty after market are pre-greased and sealed ( no fitting ).
Sarge,
I am still in the process of getting my engine back. I will hook up with Denny's after I get the engine in the car. What I think is kinda interesting is, the strongest half shaft Denny markets are the least expensive of the three he offers. Pretty good deal at less than $500.00 total including the u-joints and mounting flanges. That includes a lifetime gurantee that the rest of the car will brake before the half shafts do.

Hi
On CORVETTEFORUM.COM, there is presently a group purchase for carbon fibre half shafts and main drive shaft.
Interesting price and they are suppost to be the strongest beside other + points, like weight reduction.
They will possibly be my next purchase once something brakes on my 68 big block Vette.
Oh, they also claim that in case this carbon shafts would brake, they would disintegrate completely without distroying the whole underside of the car, like steel or alu shafts can do. |confusing|

Yes, I just placed my order on those Carbn Fibre 1/2 shafts. No way my puny 540hp bb will brake those things! |grin| |cheers|
