Rear End "Clunk"!
When starting cold,I have to wait for my '79 to completely warm up,& the RPM's to drop down to below 1200, or when I try to put it in reverse before then I get a loud -clunk!-sound.I'm not sure if its u-joints,or what?,and would like some suggestions.I've replaced a rubber "doughnut" thats in front of the rear end that helped some.I'm hoping I dont have to tear into the rear end or tranny. When its warmed up & idly normally, its noticeable, but barely

I am afraid I cannot be of any help with your problem, however, I have a similar situation with my 1971. It has the 350/270HP motor and 4 Speed. Occasionally, hot or cold, I will have a "clunk" in the rear end when moving from a stop sign, etc. I hope someone can help.

Vette(s): 1975 C3 Red, T-Tops, Black Interior. All I need is time and money! Getting there!
Any play in the drive train will make a clunk, and it will be worse when the engine is on fast idle or revved up for any reason.
This could be play in the diff, any u-joint, mounting bushing, motor or trans mount, etc. The only way to know is to get under the car and start checking components. Wish I could be more help, but I would need more to go on.

I'd love to say what I have seen on other vette sights, but I truly don't know, I haven't been there. Am I deprived? I like it here, and haven't felt the need. ( and I don't have the time |biggrin| )

I will bet you that your problem is the rear differential mount. This is the rubber doughnut with the steel insert that mounts the nose of the differential to the chassis. Check your Assembly Instruction Manual (what? don't have one? go to www.ncrs.org - click on the store and order one for your car!) for the proper name of this. In the past it has been called the differential mount, snubber, etc. Almost all of the better Corvette catalogs have these and IIRC they are around $40 and take less than an hour to replace. This is a knuckle buster but anyone with simple tools can replace it. Very simple to do, simple tools, just expect to get dirty. Btw, when you jack your car up, please use safety stands.

I'll see if I can get one of those, too, unless you're talking about a rubber piece I already replaced, which I stated above.I was already planning on getting new Spicer u-joints,also
