Vette(s): 1978 vette with an 80-82 stlye rear end molded in. BW six speed & an L82... for now. Lowered with VBP springs and bilsteins. Polished torq thrust wheels. New paint, audio system, aluminum radiator... Flowmaster and extreme flow exhaust components.
I just pressure washed the underside of my car so I no longer have a 1/2 inch thick layer of grease and grime on my differential. I want to know what ratio I have but I can't see the identification letters. I think it's two letters starting with a O_ but I can't see it anywhere! I've tried using a gear calculator and I come up with a number in the 4.00's, so I know that's wrong. I want to know exactly what it is. Also I do not want to lift the car, spin the wheels, and count rotations of the driveshaft. So if anyone knows precisely where the identification letters are, please tell me, I can't find them anywhere! Thanks! |bouncy|

They should be on the very bottom of the carrier.

On the very bottom about 2 inches rearward of the strut rod mounting bracket. If you still have the heat shield under there it will have to come off to see it.

Yes, it's right at the seam where the cover bolts to the differential housing. Between the spring and the strut rod bracket.

there should be a date and a three letter code.. the code tells you what the gear ratio is..

tell me this.. what is your 6th gear ratio, size of tires, and rpm in 6th gear at 70 mph and ill tell you what ratio it is.

Well right now I don't have a speedometer so... Thanks anyways. Besides, I've tried using a gear calculator before and I get a number close to 4.11's and I doubt that's right. |bouncy|

the code will only tell you what was in the car..

to figure out what IS in the car the easiest way is the drive rotation method that ken and I described in a post a few months ago..

I have an excel spreadsheet on my website that calculate the markings necessary to figure out the gear ratio..

on our small corvette drive shafts the difference between 3.36, 3.55 and 3.70 is rather minor
