 Help !!!!!

I am trying to replace the rear wheel bearings on my 76 Vette, I have managed to remove the assembly from the trailing arm but how do I get the shaft out of the hub so that I can access the bearing (and replace them).

I have a puller on it, but it won't budge and in case i am doing it wrong  I thought I would ask you experts

Thanks

Gary

Call around for a machine shop locally ,that knows how to do Corvette spindles, make sure they do ,get it done professionally ,press off old bearings and press on new ones, they have to be set up right with correct preload on the bearings, don't try to do it yourself,if you don't know what you are doing.don't beat on the bearing housing, they are $100 to $150 to replace.get a hold of a local Corvette club ,and check with them to see who does the work for them

I couldn't agree with Ron78 more. The bearings must be shimmed to very tight tolerances or they will fail in a very short time. If you really want to finish the job, there is good info in the GM service manual. You will need to get a dial indicator and having a setup tool (can be made from a worn out spindle) helps a lot.

EDIT: I think Bair's has a rebuild/exchange service available. Support our forum sponsors.

Hi, this is Flandy.  You either need a press or a rear spindle bearing knocker to remove the spindle from the bearing assembly from the  cast iron bearinf housing.  If I can further explain, feel free to call me at my home, I.ll be up a while still this evening.  My phone is 262 472-0227

Guys thanks for the input so far, I do have a dial gauge and what I believe is the correct puller, but I need to know is it really not posible without and expensive press, I am quite a skilled mechanic but have never done this job before on a Vette I have done it on a Jaguar but that was using a hydraulic press in a good workshop.

So any further advice/help would be gratefully received

Here are a couple of articals on rebuilding the trailing arms and bearing replacement. I did mine and it wasn't to bad of a job. My old bearings were a slip fit so I did not have to press apart. The ideal end play of your new bearing set is .001" to .003". Hope these articals help.

a puller didn't help me out.. had to use a  press and heating it up also... just find a garage and ask if they can press it out for you.. just a 5 minute job.. won't cost you much

I can recommend Bair's for this job as I had them rebuild the trailing arms on my last '77 Vette (the one shown in my signature below) about 10 years ago.  They did an outstanding job. proracr38716.4748148148
