I have an 82 automatic with 110,000. The car is new to me as are corvettes. The car runs great but I am not happy with the way it shifts into and out of overdrive.

It shifts into overdrive way to soon. It is rather annoying. It always wants to be in overdrive. It shifts into it too soon and does not come out if it soon enough for me (the car vibrates casue it is in to low of a gear).

I have filled the transmission to the proper level when the car is running. I have purchased a new filter but have not changed it yet (no garage and it is still winter in Maryland.

My question is: Is there a sensor (vacuum) external to the tranny which can be sending the wrong signal telling the tranny to go into or come out of Overdrive?

I prefer to drive the car in 3rd gear. It runs great there. I only shift into drive when I am going 45-50.

Any suggestions. Could it be as simple as a new filter and new fluid? Wouldn't that be nice?

Thanks,

Obie

Obie,

Not sure on your year or tranny type. However, I had a Trans Am with a 700R4 in it pretty recently with the same problem. There should be a cable that connects to your throttle called the "TV" cable. This could possibly be the adjustment that needs made. If you have a Chilton's or a Haynes they should detail it very well, as it is probably different that the adjustment on mine was. On mine there was a button on the left, push the button in, slide the cable housing all the way back to the bracket, release the button. After you have done this (extending more cable from the housing) open the throttle all the way. The cable should click up somemeaning at full throttle the cable is all the way out.
I found all this out after my Tranny died! The shop that did the rebuild told me to leave the car in drive unless I was going to be on the highway, and then and only then, pull it back in OD. Apparently there aren't as many clutches or they are weaker for voerdrive or something along those lines. Probably not very helpful, but it might be.

Thanks for the direction. I pulled out the shop manual and the TV cable definitely could be the cause of my symtoms.
