In m y 78 the spedo goes nuts when ya get over 60, is that the cable? Also I went to the local auto rip off and picked up a new cable just in case but... the instructions state to take the old one out cut to length(the new one is 120") Then use a stake on to fasten the end of the cable to a copper or brass colored conector.(this end is round and the other end is square). But I was told that stake ones are Illegal SOOOO How do I go about this?!
Thanks

It is best to get the proper cable and case assembly and install it, less hassel.
But first
Dissconnect the cable at the tranny, attach a drill to the end of the inner cable and run the speedo up to 60 and see if it still does it, if it doesn't it could be the speedo gear at the tranny.

I agree buy the proper cables. I had the cruise control transducer go bad on me and cause trouble. If you have cruise then you will have two cables. One on each side of the transducer.

I've never heard of the DIY cables being "illegal"....that makes no sense at all.
But...I digress.
It really is best to get the correct cable assy(inner&outer) for the car. The way the cables snake around on a Shark is rough on them to start with.
As John(acplus) says, try the drill test first. If the gauge still jumps, then go with the cable. If it doesn't, then you have a speedo gear that is damaged, or the speedo housing is worn enough to let the gears flop.
Is this a 4 speed or auto trans?
Does it have cruize?
If it has cruize, the problem is more likely in the cruize transducer, mounted on the ds fenderwell.
also...it could possibly a problem with the gauge assy itself...

I thought maybe gages too. The tranny is a 350 auto that was rebuilt about a year ago. I just had that put in earlier in the summer, but the problem has been going on thru both trans. No cruize but... this is also not the origional column either. It is from a 76(earlier issue pointed that out when I wanted to change out the steering wheel) does anyone know where I could get the correct cable and case assembly?

I had a similar issue and after greasing the cable, it went away....
And just what are you doing driving faster than 60 anyway??

Well actually my dad was behind me in his rx7 and I had to see just how fast it would go and used him as a guage since mine was not up to the task. Gosh I need a race track to take it too!especially after I get a zz4!
