Check/lube the cable first. That is the most likely culprit. The only other problem area that you haven't checked would be the gears on/in the trans itself, or the ratio adaptor, if your car has one.
Oh...and the cruiz control transducer, if you have cruiz.
I'd go with the cable as the main suspect.

indeed most likely you need to put some grease inside the cable .

With my '78 a couple of years ago I had the same problem. In my case it was the transducer for the cruise control. As already said, check and grease the cables. If that doesn't do it, the transducer is the likely culprit.

Ya know, after I said that about the cruiz, it hit me that this is a 4spd car.
I'm not 100% sure, but I don't think the 'Vettes had a cruiz w/standard tranz until the '84s came out with the Nash/Trash units.
Anybody confirm or deny this rumor?

Vette(s): 1979, 350sb, as my kids affectionately call it "shit brown" Corvette purchased in 1996. 84,000+ miles. Not a show car, but I love her just the same.
