I replaced my speedometer cable yesterday on a 74 bigblock, auto, THM400.

It is a new cable, the bag was sealed and there was just a little bit of lubrication. Before finishing the second connection to the tranny, I was able to easily rotate the wire and the needle was moving just find.

It was too late to take it for a spin (and it was raining anyway!),
so I don't know if it works perfectly or it is a little jumpy.

I saw in catalogs that they have tools to lube these cables and a noticed a few discussions about it here.

Was I suppose to lube a new cable or is it just for old ones once in a while ? (Hopefully not, because I didn't!).

Most of the new cables come with some lube on them. If you want to do it now, it's not too bad. Unconnect the cable from the dash, and use some pliers to pull the inner cable out, once out, get some white grease and lube it good as you push it back in. Then just connect back up to the dash. There is no need to undo the tranny part.

I agree. Most new cables will have some lube, but some do not. The new one I put on the '74 6-7 yrs ago did not. I did pull the inner cable out and ran it thru a can of motor oil/moly-lube mixture, and then installed it. No problems (yet )
Just a quick note, though. The first cable I ordered was a little long, but it seemed to fit OK. It lasted about 50 miles! I then bought one from a different place, about 7 inches shorter, and it's worked fine ever since. One size does NOT fit all in this case!!

The one I bought was the exact same length as the old one, but it did seems about 3 inches too long and had a little bit of lube on it.

If it was a little bit shorter, it would not be as close to the headers as it is; about 2.5" away from the headers. Hopefully, I do a little more than 50 miles on it as I have more important engine work to spend my time on.
