Hi all,

Noticed today that my speedometer remains "normal" and generally accurate up to about 50mph. As soon as I get going a little faster, it starts to jump and bounce all the way past 160. As I slow down, it starts to behave again. Any idea if this is a sign of something bad to come? Does the cable just need to be lubed or adjusted?

|rollysmile| Thanks for the help!

Normally the bounce and jump are caused by needing a lube. Mine would go up to 40 or so before the bounce.

It's not too hard to do, just getting to the cable is the hardest part. There are several good posts from kstyler about how to do it.

As already said, your problem is likely the cable needing lubed, but if you have cruise control, a transducer going bad can cause the same problem, though probably not as pronounced as yours.

hi gmurray --

I had such an itch to take her out -- I just HAD to do it today! Took the day off from work to run errands before vacation next week. What better to run errands in than big orange princess? We haven't had snow in 2+ weeks so the roads are pretty clean. It was sunny but cold today.

Thanks for the advice on the speedo cable. Can anyone tell me exacly where and how to locate it and what the best method is for getting some lubricant on it? Thanks -- I'm OK changing the oil & filter -- but just don't trust myself to do much more! |laugh|

Hey Joe V,

It's not too hard to do, or very complicated, but it is allot easier if you take the dash pad off. There have been several posts about getting your hand up behind the dash pad and undoing the clip that holds the cable in place, but let me tell you, I worked at trying this way, and all I did was give myself a back ache and some squished hands. It's allot of work to take off the dash the right way, so as to not screw anything up, but after you do that, the speedo cable is a sinch.

I took off the door pillar covers, then unscrewed the lower dash pads. I lifted the upper dash pad off, and dropped the stearing wheel to give me more room. After that it was easy to get to the cable.

Once at the cable, just undo the clip holding it in place, and pull the cable out of the tube with some needle nose pliers. Wipe it down, and spray some white grease on it. Re-insert, and rotate to make sure it's seated. Then put everything back. I know that it sounds like allot of work, but it only took me an afternoon.

I'm happy that you got her out for some fun! I should have my interior fixes done in a couple of weeks and I can't wait to take her out. Maybe I'll see ya at some of the CT events this summer!
