Howdy
Well I have had to replace the nylon gear in the tranny 3 times in less 200 miles. I have checked the speedo cable and it appears to spin pretty easy. The gear appears to strip out where it slips on the key inside the housing not the gear teeth. Help going nuts
Any ideas

The cable is still the likely culprit. Take it out and lube it. Turning at highway speed is not the same as turning it slowly by hand.

concur... my green machine did this..
good lube is the first step

OK
I will try lubing the cable. can I remove the cable at the tranny or do I have to get behind the dash and diconect from the back iof the speedo housing?
Mike
PS the needle never jumps, its very smooth.
Thanks

The needle only jump if the cable binds and releases. A constant drag won't make it bounce.
You need to pull it out of the housing from the speedometer end.

there is a cable lubing tool that you can buy at parts stores and the corvette specialty shops.. this might save you from having to pull the dash side..
if you do pull the dash.. pull the center and passenger side. this will give you enough room to reach in and pull the speedo cable.. you have to push a little tab and pull the cable.
Let me add a description of my recent problem. The speedometer and odometer quit working at the same time. There was no early indication something was going wrong. I had replaced the lower speedometer cable last year because the protective sleeve was melted from the exhaust pipe. I remove the lower cable and visually checked it again....everything seemed okay. Disconnected the upper cable from the cruise control transducer and spun it. The speedometer moved fine.....no binding. Do I have a bad cruise control tranducer? How can I check to determine if this is the problem? Help!

The transducers do go bad, and they will cause the cable to strip at the gear. The transducer should turn easily. It may need rebuilt.
Since it is impossible to get my hand close enough to where the cable connects to the transmission, can I check the function of the connection at the transmission by disconnecting the cable from the transducer? My thought is that if I drive the car and hold the end of the cable I can determine if it is turning correctly while still connected at the side of the transmission. If I have to inspect the connection point closer I believe I will have to drop the transmission cross member support...which I do not want to do. If what I have stated so far is a bunch of bunk....how can I test the transducer? Can you connect at either connection and see if it turns easily. I want to make sure this is the problem before I drop $90.00 dollars for a rebuilt transducer.

youre talking about jogging along side while someone drives it slowly ??
id just chock the front tires and lift the rear on jacks stands.. fire it up and put it in gear.. this will show you..
