another method.. take a spool of thread and tie it tight around the cable.. run a stiff wire through the spool to act as an axle and hang it on something then drive it 100 ft or so and see if it pulled thread off the spool

A final thought on my speedometer not working. I finally disconnected the lower cable from the transducer and verified that,in fact, the cable is working properly. As I mentioned previously in this thread I disconnected the upper cable to verify that it was turning the speedometer needle. This also checked out fine. Since I tried to set my cruise control, which did not work, I have come to the conclusion that the transducer is not working. Before I order a re-built transducer, is there anything else I should consider or order to ensure when the parts arrive I can put this problem to bed? Final note, I also checked the vacuum hoses for any leaks.....none found.

It really sound like a bad transducer. Try turning the transducer input where the lower cable attached. It will problably be stiff. It should turn easily.

Received my new transducer for Ecklers. Began to swap out with the old one and ran across a problem. Ecklers book show a tranducer for 80-82 with a three-pronged electrical plug connection and the body has no mounting holes for the resume selenoid mounting bracket. The transducer on the car has a two-pronged electrical connection and two screw holes for the resume selenoid mounting bracket. According to Ecklers, this is the transducer for 77-80. Can other CE owners or anyone else tell me how to determine if the existing transducer is the right one? Maybe it has been replaced before? |headscratch|

I don't know about the holes for the bracket, but when I replaced the transducer on my '78, the replacement had three contacts and my original had two. It still fit and worked fine. I believe the third contact is for cars with a "cruise on" light.

You are correct on the cruise indicator light. I would have used what I received but I did not want to remove the resume selenoid/bracket. This selenoid does have it's own electrical plug and serves a purpose as well. I have sent the transducer back to Ecklers and will get the 77-80 model since everything else will connect and mount as designed. Thanks for the input.
