Universal joint question, I was suspicious of my drive shaft u-joints so I removed the shaft to check them out.  The front u-joint is stiff and hard to move.  The rear one moves freely.  I don’t notice any play in either of them.  I’m no expert but I assume the front u-joint should move freely also correct?

I believe I will replace them both.

Any u-joint should swivel fairly freely. A small amount of tension is all that you should have. You shouldn't have to man(or woman)-handle one to get it to move. If you have one that just "flops", it is not good, either. Most of the time, when the "guts" start getting rusty/damaged, they will tighten up(lack of lube). Then, as they get worse, and the rollers just grind themselves into rust-dust that's when they start getting loose, and making noise.
It's always best to replace all joints on a shaft at the same time.
