Well,I have replaced the rear wheel bearings, all 6 U-joints,put in a poly "snubber",replaced the differential fluid with synthetic w/posi additive. And I still have a clunking sound when making quick turns, and it still makes a loud clunk when it slams into reverse when the RPM's are too high(typically when cold).I guess my tranny is out of "adjustment",or the rear end is going bad?I have a '79 with a TH-350. |cussing|

This may not realate to your problem, but, I chased a 'clunk' for a while until I found the exhaust pipe hitting where it feeds through the transmission cross member. Surprised me how much it sounded like it was coming from the rear dif.

Dont do that... let your car warm up.....

but as for noise in corners..

did you check your

transmission mount ??
swaw bar bushings ??
exhaust system ??

I had a loose U-clamp that let my exhaust rock back and forth only when it got hot.. when i touched it cold it didnt move..

tightened it up and the sounds is gone..

Oh,I do let it warm up now.I need to check the tranny mount I guess, and I was told to check the engine mounts & exhaust also. The dual exhaust is brand new.

Might be the rear end...

My 73 had a heavy clunk going into reverse when I first got it.

In the restoration / rebuild adventure, one of the first things I did was to replace the transmission (TH400). A new tranny made no difference. Well, maybe it did make a difference, the clunk sounded smoother, but was still there. |laugh|

Continuing in the rebuild, many moons later, I finally got around to the rear of the car. I dropped the entire rear suspension and drive components.

I sent the rear end, trailing arms and bearings off to be rebuilt. Its not that I thought anything was bad, but while everything was off... and since I'm only doing this job one time... they were rebuilt.

When I reassembled it I replaced everything... rubber, all U joints, etc.

The clunk I had before is much much less now. But there is still a (faint) clunk. (It might be because I am aware of it, anyone else wouldn't hear it |ohwell| )

It sounds like you too have replaced just about everything in the rear driveline... except the rear end itself. You might need to have it looked at.

Also, the symptoms you described (going into reverse, quick turns) kinda sound like things a tired differential might groan (or clunk) about.

One thing you might try to isolate the problem is to get someone else to shift the car and you listen from the outside to see if can pinpoint where the clunk is coming from.

Let us know how you do...

OK,thanks...But I think I
m going to have to make some more money 1st,as I just got laid off.The rear end is not something I want to tackle even if I had a decent place to work on it..which I dont.I suppose having it "rebuilt" would be more economical than replacing one? |headscratch| |idea|

Since you replaced bearings, I assume you were into the parking brakes and checked/replaced that stuff. They can fall apart inside and cause wierd noises.

Something to think about - You can get rebuilt differentials from a place like Mid American for $800 (with a rebuildable core) That way you can change the rear axle ratio if you want to.

The parking brakes were addressed at the time the work was done.I currently have a 3:55 rear end ratio that sure could use a 700-r4,which might be happening in the future. Is it possible that the clip that ties the axles together in the rear be worn?
