I came to a stop and I wasn't able to move the shifter into another gear...although there is some play.

Strange, since it was shifting so smoothly a few seconds earlier.

Has anyone had a similar experience?

Is your shifter linkage still completely attached?
Same thing happened to a friend of mine at a show. One of the side bolts had fallen out.

I believe the linkage is still hooked up, but I haven't had a chance to look under it yet. Thank you for your feedback...I'll have to check it out tomorrow.

Regards,
Chet

If still hooked up, it may be misadjusted and causing the shifter to not line up with the trans postion. If you disconnect the linkage and place the trans shift bars in neutral, then put the shifter in neutral, reconnect the links. Now make sure the center sections that connect to each link is in line. Many have a small hole to insert a pin or drill bit to center them. Adjust as needed. This prevents a repeat performance.

sounds like your in 2 gears at the same time. You have to get under the car and make sure all the gears are disengaged. You might need a wrench and someone to rock the car to relieve the pressure on the gears that are engaged.

Hi Ken,

I'll check if it needs re-adjustment and let you know how it goes. Thank you.

Chet

Hi John,

I didn't realize that you could actually be in another gear at the same time. I hope I didn't cause more damage by driving it home (<0.5 miles) this way. Thank you.

Happens to me more then I care to admit...in my 72 But I have the shifter set for "short" throws...and a few times each summer I will tangle up the linkage... A FEW GOOD HARD WRAP ..horizontal slap from the passengers side toward my right
leg has always got it untangled...

Never happened when I had the shifter set in the normal long throw configuration... I can not remember where I saw the
demensions for the WOODEN tool to adjust the linkage but I
made one in about 5 minutes... One day I will modify it
to corectly adjust the linkage IN SHORT THROW..

Hi Bob,

Thank you for the information.

I was thinking that it might be more serious, but the feedback I'm getting is quite consistent...and seems to be related to the linkage.
