Topic: TCS problem on 4 sp
in Forum: C3 Driveline Components
Hi All,
I need to fix this problem that came along with the rebuild last year. The TCS is not working, so I just ported the vacuum straight to the distributor and of course that pulls in all the advance at idle. I resealed the transmission and most likely goofed it up not knowing the levers are different.
The problem is the 3 -4 shift lever never grounds the switch to kick this in, everything works otherwise. I am thinking the detent is swapped by having the 3 -4 and 1-2 levers installed in reversed locations
The question is, is it possible to pull the side cover off the 4 sp and get these levers out to put them back where they belong? Or do I need to pull the transmission out to get enough room to do this?

As far as the "levers" being in the wrong spot, are you talking about the levers on the outside of the unit, that the shift rods connect to? If so, then it would be easy to swap them back, but I don't think you would be able to get all four gears if they are swapped.
If you are talking about the shift "forks" on the inside, they are both the same, so swapping them is not a problem.
Now, the shift "arms"(shafts), that go thru the side cover, and the shift levers connect to them on the outside, and the forks on the inside, can not be swapped, but you may not have the "bulge" on it that activates the TCS switch. If this is your problem, then you can remove the side cover, and replace the front shaft. I would pull the cover, and see if there is a "tit"(sorry, ladies) on the 3-4(front) shaft, to activate the switch, first. The shafts simply pull out of the cover. There are two steel balls(or plugs), and one spring that hold tension on the detents on the two shafts. Just keep an eye out for these, cause they will want to escape!
It is possible that the switch itself is bad, or the push-buton terminal is worn off.
Hope this helps fix your problem.

Thanks Joel,
Yes, everything is working correctly, time delay and all. I can ground the wire to the switch and it works properly ie, engine warm, in 4th for 25 seconds......it worked before I took it apart.
I am certain the shafts are the problem, the switch works out of the transmission ok, just never closes in 4th. I was hoping I did not have to pull the trans out to get the side cover off...sounds like all I need to do is drain the oil and pull the cover.
I got it running last year in haste, but the carb idle adjust is bottomed out to compensate for the timing advance in idle - makes it very stumbly idle after it warms up with this condition
