Vette(s): 1982 Bright Blue Corvette Coupe, 5.7L 350 V8 w/ a performance chip & 160-degree fail-safe thermostat, K&N filters, Hedman Headers & a tru-dual exhaust w/ Borla tips. Turbo-700 has a B&M Shift Kit & rear end has 3.73 posi-gears.
I've got a quick question for you gear-heads....or actually I just need to verify something; after I service the TH700 automatic transmission in my 1982 Vette, what is the number of quarts of ATF needed to refill the transmission....four quarts, right?? Thanks in advance for your help!

Just watched the guy at the local quick oil change place hook up his contraption to my company car. All the oil gets pushed out and new oil pumped in without any mess. That's the only way to go!

The full flush is by far the best. But don't forget that filter still needs to be changed. Doing both is the best combination.

I agree that the flush idea is a good one, but without changing the filter it's not doing much good. I am a transmision specialist, and you would not believe the number of jobs I get from people who just had a "flush and fill" job. I also get quite a few that have had radiator damage from the use of a flush system.( The trans cooler is internal to the radiator). Just a word of caution! Some of the chemicals that are used in the flush system can actually damage the friction material on the clutches, causing the glue to deteriorate, and the clutch lining to flake off. In the long run, it's really best to drop the pan and do the fluid/filter change regularly. Hope this helps. |hammer| |thumb|

I agree completely. There are some very harsh chemicals out there. They need to be avoided. When I recommend the flush, and still do, I am suggesting just clean fluid. That give it a full change of fluid, instead of leaving some of it in there. You must change the filter.

Guess I should have explained that. Adam's Apple, Thanks for the catch.

small trick if you get it completely drained of fluid is to add ford "type F" fluid instead of dexron...

it will make the shifts much firmer..

gives you that neck snap you may be missing.

The information about chemicals and what they can do to a transmission is very timely to me. Over the weekend the "check engine" light came on in my daily driver ('98 Mercury Mountaineer). I had it checked yesterday and the trouble codes showed the torque converter is intermittently slipping...from what I understand not an inexspensive fix. It's OK for now, but if I continue to have problems I'll have to decide whether to repair it or replace the vehicle.

I've had the transmission flushed by the BG system twice as often as the manual calls for, so now I wonder if the problem would have occurred anyeay, or due to the flushing method?

Chances are you would have still encountered this problem, only later. A T.C. slippage code really doesn't mean the TC is actually slipping. It sets this code if the 'puter sees a different input/output speed ratio than it wants to see. It could be TC slippage,O/D slippage, intermittant speed sensor info, etc. The computer stores info pertaining to the codes set, and that info is used to pinpoint where the trouble actually started. My experience with these units (4R44E/5R55E)is that most of the time the problems are solenoid related. I have found that replacing the valve body in the trans usually takes care of the codes, IF no damage has occured to the trans. If there is no evidence of contamination(excessive crap in the pan),chances are this would take care of it.But then, it is a Ford!!! |hammer| |thumb| |haha| |biggrin|
