Ok , I rebuilt the transmission over the winter, new bearings and syncros and sliders. Transmission is back in and the good news is that  I now have 3rd gear back. In the past I could never shift into 3rd gear.  I have a temporary eBay CPlus shifter in as the original went to Hurst for rebuild, but that takes 8 weeks.
The issue is that there is some kind of ticking noise near the bell housing. I drove the car around the block and all gears work OK, but there is a ticking noise. The noise is also there when the car is stopped and running in neutral and also with the clutch in.
The car is back on stands as now I need to find out where the ticking comes from.
Anyone have any ideas?

Right now the clock is out of the car, so that's not the root cause. By the way I have the clock running on a power supply after I filed the points. This seems to be a common cause for inop clocks. Does anyone know where you can buy new points?

You didn't say if you had replaced the clutch and throughout bearing. the throughout bearing sounds suspect, though it usually changes tone when engaged (when noisy) unless it's engaged full time. Though I'm new to Chevys, I've replaced several new throughout bearings on Fords that were faulty. Good luck Jack.

Yes, I did replaced the clutch, pressure plate and pilot and through out bearing. I also had the flywheet resurfaced. I will pull the starter and the cover plate at the front of the bell housing to see if I can see anything wrong. I hate the thought of pulling the transmission again.

So if the clutch is in and it makes noise that at least rules out the tranny right? So is it a metal to metal noise and does it increase with RPM?

Yes tranny seems to operate fine.

I have a hunch that it's something to do with the front cover on the bell housing, tomorrow I will pull the starter and remove this front cover.

Yes it inceases with RPM, I'm thinking that I did not thighten a bolt or put in the wrong size.

Found the root cause. I removed the starter and the front bell housing cover. That cover was rubbing in the end of the crankshaft. I took off the cover and reinsatlled starter. Everything sounds great.

Thank goodness, I was not looking forward to removing the transmission again.

All right Jack ! Thumbs Up Found a similar thing on the wife's inspection cover recently. Guess she hit a speed bump and caved it into the ring gear.
