ok, so I got it up on the rack. turned the wheels.....,
Tick, Tick, Tick.......
Followed the sound....
Forward, forward, forward......
And the winner is.....
The sound comes from where the speedometor cable enters the tranny.
So its not the rear wheels, Bearings, brakes, weights, or studs, (yes that was GOOD!) thats just how the sound came out.
The speedo doesnt bounce around at all. So if I unhook the cable, isnt there a bolt that holds the whole deal in also?
Closer, we are getting closer.....

IF you unscrew the cable, does the noise go away, or is it still there?
If it goes away, then the cable needs to be lubed, or replaced.
You need to know that the governor for the trans is right there, also, and the weights on it will flop back and forth as the driveshaft turns, and they will make a little "click" noise. However, the governor normally is not loud enough to hear as you're driving.
You can remove the speedo housing by taking the 1/2" head bolt out of the clip that holds it in the trans. You will lose some fluid, so have a drainpan under it. The only possibility I can see as a noise would be the clip that holds the speedo gear to the shaft of the trans. It may be bent, or out of place enough to hit something back there, but I don't know what the heck that would be! Maybe it's hitting the governor weights...

Thanks Joel, thats the kind of info I need. I was wondering if I would loose fluid. So IF its the governor is that something that is a tranny drop to fix?
I hope its just the cable thats making the noise.
It is very faint but it can be heard.

The governor is held in by the cover on the side of the trans back there. The one with four bolts on it. Take the four bolts out, remove the cover, and spin the gov. out.
I have seen some in the past that the nails that hold the weights on the end of the gov. would shear, or come loose, and they would scrape on the trans case as they spin around.

That doesnt sound good.
Hey Dude, My 77 does the same thing. I have to get a rubber hammer and tap on the aluninum wheel covers and it stops, but only till it starts again, I can't make them stop permanently. If anyone knows how to stop the ticking sound in the wheel covers let me know, less taking them off. thanks, Gene
