Vette(s): 1981 - 59 Beige over Cinnebar leather. Edlebrock top end, 2200 stall w/shift kit, 3:55s, Mufflex maniback exhaust, nice stereo, 16 in AREs w/BFGs
I've been looking to upgrade to a higher stall TC for my 81.  SHes a stock L81 w/the exception of hi-flow header back exhaust and Edelbrock intake.  The TH350 has a BM shift kit and is dialed in great but the 1400 rpm TC is a little anemic.  The 81s have the 1 year only funky TH350 w/lockup.  The only TC I could find is from TCI.  They make a 2000 rpm which is perfect but its almost 600.00!  Any you guys have any ideas?  Thanks!  Kevin.

It was one year only in the Corvette, but the 350C(lock-up) was put out in 1979, and was used for many years after, in most other GM vehicles.
I can't imagine not being able to find a 'stall' conv. for one, but I build them (trannys) every day, so I don't count! Actually, GM did have higher stall converters available, but most places don't keep them, because they're not exactly hot sellers anymore.
Have you checked with any local tranny shops there? A lot of shops build their own conv.s, and you could get one built like that. Prices around here for a stall tc for a 350 would be more like $200-$275, retail.
I could check, if you'd like, and see if I could find a supplier in you area that would help you out. Shoot me an e-mail, if you want.

Thanks! ANy help is appriciated.  I spoke to one trans guy who quoted me 500.00 for a new TC.  250.00 seems like a bargain!  THANKS!  Kevin..

Dacco builds a T.C. for the 350C trans, and it is listed in their "HP" section. Specs are:
2300-2500 rpm stall speed(max)
12" diameter
Furnace brazed impeller
Thrust washers replaced with bearings.

The stall speed of any TC is dependent on the torque available from the motor. A stock (small blk) motor might not stall to 2300 rpm, but a stock big block absolutely would.
Dacco is an OE supplier for GM, so quality is not an issue. These converters were engineered for the higher output engines, so they were most likely used in the Camaro/Firebirds of the late 70s-early 80s, and possibly Corvettes, too.
Just a little more info for those inquiring minds who want to know. Adams' Apple38540.7864699074
