Topic: Trailing Arm Split

Pictured is the face of my left rear trailing arm. The cut inside the red oval is approx. 1/32 of an inch wide in the middle and a little over an inch deep. How does something like this happen?
More importantly, is this salvageable or trash? Was planning on blasting and painting the arm and ordering rebuilt hub and bearing assembly to install. Now I'm thinking I may be in for an entire unit. Opinions?

I'm not an expert on T/A's, but if it was mine I think I would go with a rebuilt set. Everything all assembled, just bolt 'em in.

I wonder if there is some twisting or deflection going on back there. Or maybe a big pothole or possibly contact with a curb at one point in the cars life caused it.

Well...that's not normal....
To be honest, that looks like someone machined the inside diameter of that arm, for some reason. Too shiny to be un-touched, imho.
Like Darryl, I think I would have to replace that arm, period. Either go with a complete t-arm set-up, or just the arm itself, assuming the rest of the hub/spindle/bearings are not messed up.

I agree with the others go with a rebuild. I just installed my rebuilds a month ago and glad I did, as I looked at the other parts there was more issues than just one and you will probably find the same, whatever caused that crack probably caused a few other problems
Used a little sandpaper on the inner part to remove some corrosion and make that crevice show up better in the pic. Spoke with Brian at Bair's this afternoon and shipping crates are on the way for both left and right arms. Caving in and writing the check for this job. Still plenty of other things to tackle.
