i changed the filter, fluid and gasket earlier this year , and now i have a drip at a cable entry on the side of the housing.
there is a cable that is on a bracket that is held in place by 2 pan screws. when i changed it , i just let it hang till i was done.im hoping it is just a bad seal or O ring.
i also seem to be leaking oil at the fuel pump , but that is another day! Thanks |wavey|

Hey Charlie,

Sorry no one offered any thoughts on your question. There were over 30 looks at it so I'm surprised that someone didn't offer up a suggestion. (I'm not much help as "The Toy" is a 4-speed.) You might try looking at Corvettefaq.com for some answers. A lot of referrals are made to that site in other postings here on C3VR.

i know which cable you are referring to but i cannot locate any info on it's sealing in the shop manuals. I'm sure there is some kind of seal in it probaly an O ring. i'll keep looking

sounds like the shift shaft seal. get one at any parts store. a little tricky to get the old one out....use small hooks and screwdrivers.

I had the same problem. I found this cool looking tool that might do the trick to change the seal. I am about to get one, I think... I found it all over the net for around $30, but this site has it for $16.75. Check it out, see if it is what you need. I guess it lets you change the seal without removing the pan, and the fluid.

I should include a picture of my leak, same thing. I just took this today. By the way, anyone know what the whole is above the rubber part of the shifter arm? It is threaded, and empty on my THM350. Looks WAY too clean to always have been empty. Makes me thing that something fell off recently. HELP..

P.S.
Notice the DRIP on the tip there?????

Thanx...

Did you ever fix your leak? The photo above looks like it might be a 4 speed transmission? Mine is an automatic and is leaking near this same kind of pivot/linkage area. It's leaking really bad! I the seal a rubber seal or metal seal? How tough is it to replace?

Vette(s): 1975 C3 Red, T-Tops, Black Interior. All I need is time and money! Getting there!
The shift shaft seal is made of rubber. Some designs are an o-ring, many are a lip type seal. If it has a lip seal, make sure the lip points toward the inside of the trans. I have never tried to change one with the pan on. But with the pan off, unbolt the link shaft both inside and outside of the trans, and slide the shift rod out, and then the seal is easy. The hardest part is removing the pan again. The is no worry about shaft alignment. All the adjustment is where the linkage hooks to the lever on the outside. Put this one back where it was, the rest of it only goes one way.
You may be able to pull the seal out from the outside, but I have never tried to do that. Generally I have done a complete trans service at this point, but you have allready done that.
There are also o-ring seals on the vacuum modulator, shift cable housing, governor cover, and speedo gear. All of these can be changed without removing the pan, just pull the component out and install the o-ring. On the cable there is a center cable that if pulled out far enough can be unhooked from a link going into the trans. This way it is fully disconnected and the o-ring can be installed. The governor cover is held in by a snap ring. Most of the time when the snap ring is removed, the cover sticks. Clean the opening where the cover slides out before and after pulling the retaining snap ring. Then tap on the trans housing aroung the cover, while wiggling the cover and it will come off. The modulator, just remove the retaining bolt and pull it out. The speedo gear input has two seals. Disconnect the speedo cable, remove the one retainer bolt, and pull the housing out of the trans. One o-ring seal is on the outside of the housing, and one is inside where the speedo driven gear goes into the housing. Pull the gear and it's easy to install the seal. Make sure the housing goes back in the same position it came out.
The only remaining seals are the rear seal and front seal. The rear seal requires pulling the drive shaft. The front seal requires pulling the transmission and the torque convertor.
This may be a lot more than you were asking. Hope it helps.

It's probably the shift shaft seal, there was a thread about that a while back, and somebody back up the line on this thread mentioned a tool for removing it.If it is the speedo drive seal, its not a big problem either I replaced mine this fall, the only thing I did different was I replaced the whole unit, not just the seal, when I got the drive gear housing out I noticed the speedo was pretty loose in the housing, and the threads were pretty messed up on the outside edge where the speedo cable screws on to the end.so I ran down to my local Chevy dealer and for about $16.00 got a brand new one with new drive and O rings and popped it in,no more leaks |thumb|
