Last night I started to drop the trans from the 72 so I can install the 2004r. I removed the exhaust going thru the cross member. I think Bubba installed it as the clamps were drawn that tight I had to use the torch to heat and pull it apart. I then dropped the crossmember removed the torque converter bolts. By then it was midnight so I decided to wait till Sunday to finish pulling it out. Just a few things I noticed while under there. The wires coming down to the starter are a mess, but there is a ground wire from that part of the harness that they have going to the lowest bolt on the trans/motor bell housing. I dont remember ever having a wire that low on the trans. I can remember ground wires up on the top 2 bolts. Also the other ground strap that goes from the frame / motor mount (passenger side) they have going from the frame to the back of the starter. (actually on the starter case bolt) Is that something I should change when going back together? Once I drop the trans I plan on spraying the under side floor boards with the lizard skin for heat /sound insulation then I will (hope) to add the 2004r trans. I havent done a transmission on the floor for over 30 years. Not really excited about this job! I update as I go, maybe even add pics!

Hey Rod, I think I have a ground wire on the same bolt. I replaced every ground strap that I could find to help in combatting the infamous C3 battery draining gremlin!! They are cheap to replace and if it's down by the starter, that strap has been exposed to heat and brittle if it's the original. I'd change her out.

As far as the starter wires go, coincidentally, I just ordered a new engine  and starter harness to further clean up the engine compartment and those starter wires have also been near heat for a long time...those harnesses are pricey though...

Either way - below were my steps and reminders when I did my 700R4 conversion - you will not need a lot of these steps, but I thought this might be useful for you:

Trans Swap Instructions

 

 

·          Disconnect kickdown and modulator

 

·          Set car on stands/ramps

 

·          Drain trans

 

·          Disconnect trans lines

 

·          Disconnect speedo cable

 

·          Support engine oil pan

 

·          Unbolt converter

 

·          Take weight off of trans with floor jack

 

·          Disconnect e brake pulley

 

·          Unbolt exhaust, trans mount and crossmember

 

·          Unbolt and remove driveshaft

 

·          Measure from tailshaft to differential yoke

 

·          Remove dipstick

 

·          Remove cable bracket from pan

 

·          Remove bellhousing bolts

 

·          Take trans down and out

 

·          Remover flexplate

 

-------------------------------------------

 

·          Install new flexplate with new bolts and loctite

 

·          Pour 1 qt trans fluid into converter

 

·          Slide converter into trans and make sure it clicks down twice

 

·          Bolt in new trans bell housing bolts

 

·          Install new crossmember and trans mount

 

·          Remove jacks under both pans

 

·          Connect trans lines

 

·          Attach cable with new bracket

 

·          Install new driveshaft

 

·          Install exhaust

 

·          Bolt converter to flexplate with new bolts

 

·          Install new dipstick

 

·          Recheck all fasteners on trans, exhaust, driveshaft, crossmember, converter

 

---------------------------------------------------

 

·          Install shifter upgrade

 

·          Make trans lines

 

·          Install trans cooler and lines

 

·          Install carb brackets and TV cable

 

·          Adjust TV cable and DOUBLECHECK!!!

 

·          Add 6 qts of fluid and start car

 

·          Cycle gears and continue to add fluid until proper level is on  dipstck

 

·          Roadtest car and top off fluid as necessary

Thanks Paul, I see you made your transmission lines. Thats another thing I will have to do. I see bubba was at my lines as they only go to about the the lower a arms, then they are rubber from that point forward. I guess I'll have to bend some new ones as I'm not all that comfortable with that much rubber!
Rich, Thanks for the offer to help put it back in. Once it falls out and I spray it, it will take a day or two till its dry enough to do anything with it. I hope to do the whole underbody so it might be a while until it goes in. I'll give you a shoot when I plan on it. I know Im away next weekend.

Rod, I converted over to braided lines so there's no bending involved....except for my back!!Shocked

Make sure you get the TV cable timming correct and it will last you a very long time.

UPDATE: TRANNY IS OUT! Slid the jack under there this morning, Removed the starter and bell bolts and down it came. Actually that was the easiest part. My vertigo is acting up today so getting up and down from the creeper was my biggest challenge! I will definitely use a trans floor jack to put it back in, getting it out was just a regular jack. Was a little shakey at first! Any way today I will do some cleanup and hopefully spray the bottom now that its open. then run the new battery cable. I think I have decided to wait to install the new trans till the motor is in. It will be a lot easier. Guess its time to kick the engine builder in the butt and get him movin! Still a lot to do but each week I move somewhat forward. Oh, As I was laying under the car this morning I noticed that the car must have had side pipes at one time. The notches have been cut behind the rockers and there are 2 brackets welded to the frame! Maybe Someday again. I've gotten past that thought for this year!

Brian, I see you have the BTO level 2, 2004r. What are your thoughts about it. What converter are you using. I purchased the same trans from them. I also have the 2800 Converter. My gears will be the 3:55 which are the same as you have? What RPMS are you running on the highway at different speeds? I plan on driving mine quite a bit and will be using it at 65 -70 on the highway. I checked out your home page and the car looks great. You've done a ton of upgrades. I didnt notice is you are running headers or stock manifolds? Hope to catch up with you some time.
