can anyone tell me if the 76 automatics came with a THM350 or 400 The restoration book I have for corvettes say a thm 350 and the way to tell them apart is the shape of the pan, the 350 uses a rectangle pan with one corner angled while the 400 is a irregular shape, does that sound correct

For '76, the L82 engines used the 400, and the L48 used the 350...

thanks guys for links,I'm pretty sure my transmission is shot, won't shift into third and when I checked the fluid it was black, any suggestions where to get another transmission, I was looking in the summit catalog and they have tci's not bad price are they any good. Would I better off getting a new one or having mine rebuilt. I also checked jasper engines and a rebuilt 400 is $1390. and a 350 is $1276. and includes shipping and returning the core

I would suggest you take this as an opporunity to put in an OD auto trans

Seriously. A 700R4 will not only come off the line quicker ( due to the gear ratio difference) but once it kicks into overdrive the Rpms drop way off and makes for great freeway driving. A very worthwhile upgrade unless you mean to keep it numbers matching. Of course the conversion would cost a little more than a stock replacement.

since you have a 350 now a well built 200r4 would be very easy and affordable

Besides the OD it uses a lock-up convertor. When it is locked your trans runs cooler.
They also have different 1st and 2nd ratios that improve take-off's.

200-4R: 2.74 first, 1.57 second, 1.00 third, .67 fourth

Turbo 400: 2.48 first, 1.48 second, 1.00 third.

Turbo 350: 2.52 first, 1.52 second, 1.00 third

The advantage to using the 200-4r as a replacement is the size. It will fit in your car without having to change the crosmember or driveshaft length. You wil need to bend the trans cooling lines a little to get them to line up with the trans and you will need to hook up a TV cable. The shifter detent will need to be altered or replaced to match the trans shift locations. I bought my setup from http://Bowtieoverdrives.com but there are others that do the same thing.
